Anthony J. Spann, 100, of Westfield, NY passed away peacefully on Monday morning, April 11, 2022 at Absolut Care of Westfield.


Anthony was born in Westfield, NY, the son of the late James and Mary (Lachiusa) Spann. He married Rose Marie Allesi on February 23, 1971 in Westfield, NY.


Anthony is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Rose Marie Spann; a son, David (Barbara) Spann of Westfield; a daughter, Gina (Christopher) Doyle of Denver, N.C.; two step-daughters, Sharon (Mike) Sweet of Westfield and Carla Hilton of AZ; a step-son, Kent (Nancy) Hilton of Hamburg, NY; proud grandfather of four grandchildren, Anthony and Morgan Spann and Josephine and Amelia Doyle; eight step-grandchildren, Shawn, Chad, Nicole, Kelsey, Katelyn, Brett, Matthew and Ryan; four step-great grandchildren, Aaron, Mason, Matthew and Cayson.


Anthony is further survived by his sisters, Virginia M. Panaro of Buffalo, NY, Louise Cannello of Niagara Falls, NY, and numerous nephews and nieces; James J. Spann Jr., Garry Spann, Anthony Spann, Stephen Panaro, Michael Cannello, Mark Petrella, Denise Blum, Lynn P. Taylor, Mary L. Gondek and Janet Petrella.


He was preceded in death by a brother, James Spann, a sister, Josephine Panaro and a nephew, Thomas Spann.


Anthony graduated from Westfield Public Schools in 1939 and Canisius College in 1943. A veteran of the U.S. Marines, he served his country from 1943-1946, including one year in the South Pacific area. He received his law degree from the University of Buffalo Law School in 1953.


Admitted to practice in New York State in 1954, Mr. Spann was admitted to practice in U.S. District Court, Western District of New York, in 1958, and to the Supreme Court and U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit in 1977. He had been an active civil trial lawyer in all courts, including County Court, Supreme Court and the Appellate Courts of New York State.


Mr. Spann’s legal memberships included: The Bar Association of Northern Chautauqua, New York State, American Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He was also Chairman of the Grievance Committee for the Northern Chautauqua Bar Association from 1963-1966. He also was a member on the 8th Judicial District Grievance Committee from 1974-1988.


Anthony was a member of the St. Dominic RC Church, John W. Rogers Post # 327 American Legion, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #118 of Westfield and the VFW Post# 6764.


Friends and relatives may call at the Mason Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St. Westfield, NY on Monday, April 18, 2022 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Dominic RC Church, 15 Union St. Westfield, NY at 11 AM with Fr. David Tourville officiating. Burial will be private in St. James Cemetery.
