Obituary of Jean A. Mead

WESTFIELD - Jean A. Mead, age 90, formerly of Westfield, died Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Heritage Village Rehab & SNF of Gerry, NY following a brief illness.

  Jean was born September 15, 1928 in Westfield, NY, a daughter of the late A. Elmer and Helen (Vail) Allen.

 She graduated from Westfield Academy and Central School Class of 1945 and then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in teaching from Edinboro University. She continued her education at Fredonia State University and obtained her Masters degree in Elementary Education.

  She was employed by Pine Valley School, Ripley School, and Westfield Central School Districts. Jean went on to teach elementary art at Brocton Central School for 23 years prior to her retirement. 

 Jean was a past member of the Chautauqua County, Forest County, PA, and Warren County, PA Historical Societies and was also active with the McClurg Museum in Westfield. She also belonged to the Westfield Garden Club, was a past board member of the Westfield YWCA and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield.

 Her passions in life were gardening, quilting, cooking, genealogy, owning several quarter horses, that had successful show careers and helping her husband manage their grape farm. However, most of all she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

 She is survived by her son: Dean (Sherry) Mead of Westfield, NY and her two Grandchildren; Mitchell Mead of Hollywood, MD and Brittany Mead of Savannah, GA. and a sister Anne Steinbach of Port Ludlow, WA.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Richard A. Mead, whom she married in August of 1949, her daughter Julie A. Mead and her two brothers, A. Elmer “Slim” Allen Jr., and John V. Allen.

 Family and friends may call at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY.

on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 1PM until 3 pm and are invited to attend the Memorial Service there at 3 pm with Rev. Ronald Sumption, officiating. Burial will be private at the Westfield Cemetery.
