Obituary of Spencer R. Lowell

Spencer R. Lowell of Cass Street, Westfield, 90, died February 1, 2008, at Westfield Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. Lowell was born on December 6, 1917 in Cortland, New York to the late Charles and Maude Lowell. Mr. Lowell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Aino Alice (Rantanen) Lowell; his daughters, Karin Lowell of Los Angeles, California and Sandra Lowell Makuch of Mayville and his sons, Spencer Roberts Lowell, Jr. of West Roxbury, Massachusetts and Dr. David Nestor Lowell, of Reno, Nevada. He has one grandson: Jeffrey Lowell and two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Cooper Lowell, all of Charlottesville, Virginia. His granddaughter, Aili Makuch, lives with her mother, Sandra, in Mayville. He is predeceased by his two brothers, Charles and Winget Lowell. Mr. Lowell served as Major in the U. S. Air Force in World War II. He is a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, the State University College of New York at Cortland and Syracuse University. He retired as an Elementary School Principal from the Patchogue-Medford School District in 1976. Mr. Lowell and his wife were involved members of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Patchogue, New York for 44 years where he sang in the choir until the age of 85. After retirement, Mr. Lowell and his wife were instrumental in organizing Cub Scout Pack 47 and Boy Scout Troop 47, which are still active today. He was a gifted photographer and calligrapher.
