WESTFIELD - Harold William Martindale, Jr., known to many as "Pops" or Marty", age 81, of West Main St., Ripley, formerly of Westfield, died Wednesday morning, July 18, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Erie, PA, following an extended illness. Pops was born on January 28, 1926 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Harold William and Allene (Johnson) Martindale of Lakewood, NY. He attended Lakewood High School where he played varsity football. Pops enlisted in the US Navy on February 17, 1945 and was discharged on December 9, 1947. He reenlisted on February 26, 1951 and was discharged on February 18, 1955. During his time in the Navy, Pops served aboard the USS Franklin and the USS Hornet. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, The American, Asiatic and Pacific area Medals, The National Defense Medal, China Service Medal and the Navy Occupancy Service Medal. Pops was an avid fisherman, enjoying fishing on Chautauqua Lake and Lake Erie. He enjoyed his woodworking projects. With his avid sense of humor, life was always full of surprises. His gift of laughter was cherished by his family, friends and all who knew him. Pops will be greeted by his beloved pets; Gus, Peanut and Queenie. He retired from Renold, Inc. as a machinist in 1987. Following his retirement, he traveled to Fountain Hills, Arizona, where he lived for eight years and was co-partner with his daughter of Martindale Express Transportation. He traveled to Sitka, Alaska where he was co-partner with his son in Father and Son Fishing Charters. He then moved to Taylorville, Illinois where he resided for four years before returning to western New York in 2005. Pops will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Pops was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 118, the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion, and the Wm. P Jackway Post 6764 VFW all of Westfield. He was a former member of the Lakewood Fire Dept. He is survived by his wife: Pauline (Karash) Martindale, whom he married on August 22, 1953 in Jamestown. His three daughters: Mary C. Causebrook of Westfield, NY, Allene Spearbeck of Taylorville, IL, And Kathleen Salamone of Ripley, NY and his son: Harold W. Martindale, III of Sitka, AK. Pops is also survived by his ten grandchildren and their children who include; his grandson, Joseph W. Demarco of Arcade, NY and his children: Emily Lynn and Lindsey Rose Demarco both of Apache Junction, AZ, and Jason Peziol of Arcade, NY. His granddaughter, Angela K. Demarco and her children: Logan and Leehan Bauereiss all of Springfield, IL and Kyle Spearbeck of Westfield, NY. His grandsons, Michael J. Salamone, Jr. of Amherst, NY, Thomas Salamone and James P. Salamone both of Fredonia, NY, Bryan J. King, US Army, serving in Afghanistan, and Christopher Causebrook of Charlotte, NC. His granddaughters, Paula A. Causebrook and Alanna D. Causebrook both of Westfield, NY, Renee Pierce and her children: Sierra, Daija, Mary, Grace, Hannah, Ruth, Jacob and Lydia all of Sitka, AK, and April Troup and her children, Tyler, Dakota, and Abbey all of Findley lake, NY. Marty is also survived by his three sisters: Jean Abbott of Busti, NY, Beverly Wilcox and Dorothy Johnston both of Winter Park, FL, his two sisters in law, Eleanor Beck of Westfield, NY; and June Pettit of Cambridge Springs, PA as well as his brother in law, Frederick Karash of Venice, FL. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Elaine Louise Martindale, his sister, Marilyn Sanders, and his brother, Donald Martindale. Friends may call at the MASON FUNERAL HOME, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, NY on Friday evening from 5-8 PM and again on Saturday from 1 PM until the time of Services there at 2 PM with the Rev. Reuben Waddell officiating. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to VAMC 5th Floor Hospice Unit, 135 East 38th St., Erie, PA 16504.
