Obituary of John Elliot

WESTFIELD, NY - John R. Elliott, age 82 of Westfield, NY, formerly of Goose Creek, SC and Tomkins Cove, NY, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at the Absolut Care of Westfield. John was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 19, 1931, the son of the late J. Russell and Dorothy (Sandburg) Elliott. John grew up in Warren, PA and was a member of the Warren High School Class of 1949. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree from Grove City College in 1953 John entered the US Military and served for two years in the U.S. Army Military Police until his discharge in 1955. He received his graduate degree from Indiana University in 1956, after which he taught for five years in Nevada schools at Tonopah and Douglas County. After briefly teaching in Warren, PA, he was a guidance counselor at Southwestern school, and for 22 years at Pomona JHS in the East Ramapo School District in Spring Valley, NY. He was an avid supporter and collector of regional artists. He frequented the 10:45 AM lectures at Chautauqua Institution. Vegetable gardening was also a favorite pastime. He enjoyed playing golf at Storm King Golf Club in Cormwall, NY and at the Miler Club in Summerville, SC. For over forty-six years he was a sponsor of Save The Children Federation. Surviving are his sister Mary (Jack) Donaldson of Akeley, PA and his friend and companion of many years, Barbara Schmitt of Mayville, NY. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews and their children, as well as his many caring and supportive, new and lifelong friends. At John's request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service may be held at a later date.
