Obituary of Robert W. Smith

A Westfield resident since 1937, Smitty had been employed by the US Postal Service as a Letter Carrier in the Village of Westfield for over 32 years. Upon his retirement from the Post Office Smitty became Westfield's 1st Harbormaster in 1988, a position he held until health prohibited him from doing his duites in 2001. He was a graduate of WACS and was a US Airforce Veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 50 years, a member of the LOOM # 118 of Westfield for over 50 years, the Wm. P. Jackway VFW Post 6764 and the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion both of Westfied. Smitty enjoyed people. He always had a smile and a quick sence of wit and humor. He coached the White Sox Little League Team for 14 years, believeing that everyone played. Smitty himself played on several area Base Ball teams and leagues and was quite a ball player in his younger years. He was an avid hunter, especially rabbits, and outdoorsman. He and his family enjoyed camping and the fellowship of friends and family.
