Obituary of Myrtle M. Altwies

WESTFIELD - Myrtle M. Altwies, age 91 of East Main Road, Westfield, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at home with her loving family at her side, following a courageous battle with cancer. Myrtle was born in Dunkirk, NY on August 30, 1919, the daughter of the late Matthew and Clara (Long) Hollander. "Myrt" was a graduate of Dunkirk High School. She married Andrew Altwies on June 8, 1946 in Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. J. Noe. She had been employed at Van Raalte Company in Dunkirk. In 1963 she moved to Portland, NY and with her husband, they owned and operated Andy's Superette for 10 years. In 1973 they moved to Westfield, where Myrt was a member of St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church and the parish Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed dancing, doing puzzles and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her son, Thomas Altwies, of St. Louis, MO, her daughter, Joan (Jeff) DuChaine of Westfield, her grandson, Chad Altwies of Brocton and a daughter-in-law, Terri (Paul) Mundy of Dunkirk, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her beloved husband, of 60 years, Andrew, and her brothers Gerald and Elmer Hollander. No calling hours will be observed. Friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 12:00 noon at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, 15 Union Street, Westfield with Father Marius J. Walter officiating. Private burial will be in St. James Cemetery.
