Obituary of Carole Y. Cotten

Carole Y. Cotten, 80, of Dunkirk, NY, formerly of Westfield, NY passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born on January 5, 1944 in Westfield, NY, the daughter of the late John and Teddy Yusten. She graduated from Ripley Central School and then attended the State University College at Brockport, where she attained a Bachelor of Science Degree. She also attended the University of Buffalo where she earned her Master’s Degree.

Carole taught Elementary and Secondary Physical Education in the Iroquois, Silver Creek and Westfield School Districts and on the collegiate level at Jamestown Community College.

A lifelong advocate of fitness in youth, she taught swimming lessons for 20 years to many children living in Chautauqua County. Carole also owned Dynamics Unlimited Gymnastics and had coached area gymnasts for over 30 years including 5 competitive teams. Following the Masonic fire in 2010, Carole persevered with the support of the community and continued operation in different locations for many years.

She was a Criminal Investigator and was the former head of security at Cliffstar Corporation in Dunkirk, NY.

Carole is survived by two beloved daughters, Kristin (Brad) Cotten-Morris of Alpharetta, GA and Shannon ( Barry) Hussar of Spencerport, NY; a sister, Barbara (Christopher) Mannix of Talkeetna, AK; four cherished grandchildren, AJ  and Mckenna Hussar, Colton and Caden Morris; nephews and cousins; and her dear friend and constant companion, Bob Boehm of Dunkirk, NY; last but not least her dog, Cooper.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a daughter, Tamara Lynn Cotten and her furry companion, Max.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Westfield United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St. Westfield, NY at 1 PM, Pastor Phil Johnson will officiate. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please love and care for your family and friends. Show kindness to those with fur and feathers. Bring humor into a part of every day. Stand strong for what is right. Pay it forward. All things Carole believed in and exemplified throughout her life.
