Kathleen “Kathie” Brettell Horst

1932-2023

Kathleen E. (Brettell) Horst, 91, passed away on Monday November 6, 2023 at her residence in Westfield NY.  She was born on June 19, 1932 in Merrick, NY and raised by her loving parents, Charles and Kathleen Larg Brettell, in Valley Stream NY.  Kathie earned a B.A. in Psychology and a M. S. in Education from Hofstra University.  After graduation, Kathie taught in the school districts of Valley Stream, NY and Fairfield, CT.  She was also listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

In July of 1953 Kathie married the love of her life, John “Jack” Horst, in Hempstead, NY.  While living in Vermont, Kathie, along with her husband, opened a bed & breakfast near the famous Sugar Bush Ski Resort.   In addition to operating the bed & breakfast, Kathie also served as Assistant Town Clerk for Fayston, VT.  A long time animal lover, Kathie volunteered her time caring for animals in need at the Mad River Humane Society in VT.

Upon moving to Westfield in 1993 Kathie has volunteered her time to the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, the Westfield Stray Cat Rescue, the Barcelona Lighthouse and the McClurg Museum.  Kathie and Jack were recognized by the Westfield Chamber of Commerce as the Chambers 2015 Volunteers of the Year.

In addition to her husband of 70 years, John K.E. Horst, Kathie is survived by many nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews. 

Memorials may be made in Kathie’s name to the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, Westfield Stray Cat Rescue or Chautauqua County Historical Society.

No visitation will be observed and burial will be private.
