WESTFIELD - Donald E. Beers, age 88, of Springview Drive, formerly of Martin Wright Road, Westfield died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Absolut Care of Westfield. Don was born on November 15, 1922 in Westfield, NY, the son of the late Pearl and Mary (Nichols) Beers. A Westfield area resident all his life, Don attended Westfield Academy prior to joining the US Navy SEABEEs, where he served from 1943-1946 in the Philipeans during World WAR II, Don had been active with the ISLAND X-11 Navy SEABEE Veterans of America. He was a lifelong grape and dairy farmer. He had been a 4-H Leader in Westfield and had been a member of the Westfield Academy Agricultural Advisory Board. Don had been a Rural Mail Carrier for the Westfield Post office for many years. He loved farming and animals. Mr. Beers was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield since 1948. he had been a member of the Town of Westfield planning board for over 30 years, was a member of the Chautauqua County Farm Bureau and a member of National Grape Coop. He was named Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1965. He is survived by his wife: Roberta (Newman) Beers, whom he married on Nov. 14, 1948 in Westfield, his three daughters, Suzanne (Michael) Wesley of Perrysburg, NY, Catherine (Randy) Wright and Brenda (Donald) Bird, both of Westfield, his five grandchildren, Maureen Presto of Westfield, Matthew Alexander of Brocton, Nathan Bird of Allentown Pa, Angela Bird of Buffalo NY, and Larry Alexander, Jr. of Westfield, and his five Great Grandchildren, Sydnie Alexander, Nicholas and Austin Presto, Isaiah Bird and Brenden Alexander. Don is also survived by his three sisters, Eleanor Lancaster, Mary Syper and Helen Golden all of Westfield. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Robert Beers, his grandson, Shane Alexander, his infant granddaughter, Samantha Bird, and his sister, Betty Saunders. Friends may call at the MASON FUNERAL HOME, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and are invited to attend the funeral service on Wednesday at 11:00 at the First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield, 49 So. Portage St., Westfield, NY, with Rev. Stephen Morse officiating. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Patterson Library, 40 So. Portage Street, or to the First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield, 49 So. Portage St., both of Westfield, NY 14787.
