WESTFIELD - Alice T. Lown, age 96, a resident of Heritage Green, Greenhurst, NY, formerly of Gerry and Westfield, died Sunday morning, March 21, 2010 at Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Home following an extended illness. Alice was on born May 4, 1913 in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late Rufus B. and Mary (Harrington) Thornton. Alice had been a resident of Westfield for 48 years prior to moving to the Independent living section of Heritage Village in Gerry and had been a resident of Greenhurst for the past 6 months. She was a 1932 graduate of Celeron High School and attended Beauty Culture School in Buffalo, NY. She had been employed at a beauty parlor in Wellsville, NY for about 8 years and then attended Rochester Business Institute before moving to Westfield. She had been employed for 14 years by Dr. Carlton Heist in Westfield and also was the Church Secretary for the Westfield United Methodist Church for almost 9 years. She had been an active member of the Westfield United Methodist Church for over 50 years and an active member of the United Methodist Women. More recently she had attended the Gerry United Methodist Church. Alice was an avid reader, who despite very poor eyesight, still read one to two books a week. She loved Poetry and could recite many poems from memory. In her younger days, she did crocheting, sewing and decoupage. She loved caring for her plants, flowers and her lovely rose beds at her home in Westfield. She attended the Westfield walkers group for many years and was an active member of the Benjamin Prescott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Chautauqua County Historical Society. She loved and cared for many animals in her lifetime. Close friends will always remember her "old cat". She supported the Humane Society and the National Wildlife Foundation. She was a generous and caring person who was known for never saying an unkind word towards others, and, when able, would do what she could to help others in need. She loved and enjoyed her family and many friends. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Sam) Restivo of Jamestown, NY and her son, Bradley A. Lown of Ocala, FL, her grandchildren, Michael E. Restivo of Jamestown, and Tina Restivo of Charlotte, NC, and her great grandson, Ryan David Restivo also of Jamestown, NY, who brought her joy and laughter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Manley A. Lown, who died on August 8, 1971. Friends may call on Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY, and are invited to attend the funeral services on Friday at 11:00AM at The United Methodist Church of Westfield, East Main Street, Westfield with Reverends Mathew Golibersuch and Larry Baird officiating. Private burial will be in Westfield Cemetery.
