Obituary of Richard M. O'Neal

Richard M. O'Neal Richard M. "Dick" O'Neal, 58, formerly of Mayville, NY, died Sunday (Nov. 26, 2006) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk. He was born in Erie, Pa. on March 17, 1948, a son of the late Joseph and Martha Bartlett. Richard grew up in the Erie area and attended Lawrence Park High School. He previously worked for Ridg-U-Rak in North East, Pa., Better Baked Foods in Westfield, N.Y. and X-Press personnel services in Fredonia, N.Y. His greatest love was working with animals, especially horses. He was a farm hand for several farms in the Mayville area and had a small farm of his own. For years he lived on Plank Road, Mayville in a house he personally designed and constructed. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting and trapping. During deer season, he would fill all his tags and give away meat to neighbors. Other hobbies included camping and going for long walks in the woods with his dogs. He loved science fiction movies, especially Star Trek and Star Wars. He was a former member of the United Steelworkers of America and a former volunteer with the Hartfield Fire Department. Richard is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Angela (Gregory) Bacon of Stockton, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Judith, Abigail and Christopher Bacon, all of Stockton; one brother, Jim (Mary) O'Neal of Erie; three sisters, Janice (Norman) of McKean; Betty (Gene) Warren of North East; and Sue O'Neal of North East. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Judith (Chandler) O'Neal, whom he married in May, 1971 and who died in October, 1989; and one brother, Joseph O'Neal. Visiting hours will take place at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the service immediately following. Private burial will take place at Quincy Cemetery, Ripley, N.Y. Arrangements are by the MASON Funeral Home.
