Obituary of Gladys Irene Fredell

WESTFIELD - Gladys Irene (Woodin) Fredell, age 95, of Johnson City, NY, formerly of Westfield, NY, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Susquehanna Nursing and Rehab Center of Johnson City, NY. Gladys was born on March 30, 1918 in Canton, OH, the daughter of the late Roy H. and Gladys I. (Phillips) Woodin. Gladys came to Westfield from Tidioute, PA in 1940. She was a 1936 graduate of Tidioute High School and had been employed as a health care attendant by the Warren State Hospital for four years. While in Westfield she had been employed by the former Barmon Brothers Sewing Factory and retired after 16 years as a teller at the former Marine Midland Bank also of Westfield. Gladys enjoyed roller skating. She skated in Jamestown and Evans right up until 2000. She was a member of the Evans Skating Club. Gladys also enjoyed reading mysteries, fishing, hiking and bowling. She had been a member of the Westfield Fish and Game Club and The Presbyterian Church of Westfield. She is survived by her son, James VanGiesen of Smithville Flats, NY and stepsons Richard Peters of Fletcher, North Carolina, Kenneth Fredell of Kane, PA and William Fredell of West Middlesex PA , four grandsons and several great grandchildren and her sister, MayBelle Golis of Montrose, PA. She was preceded in death by her 1st Husband, Scott J. VanGiesen in 1957, her 2nd Husband, Howard Peters in 1983, and by her 3rd Husband, Robert Fredell in 2000. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Jeanne VanGiesen in 1948, her son, Scott VanGiesen in 1969, and by her two sisters, Rose Courson and Esther See, as well as by her three brothers, Roy, George and Arthur Woodin . At her request, all of Gladys's services will be private. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield, 49 So. Portage St., Westfield, NY 14787.
