Obituary of Mary Sottile

WESTFIELD - Mary (DeMasi) Sottile, age 95, of, Penn Yan, NY , formerly of Westfield died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Mary was born on February 3, 1916 in Wilmington, DE the daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Barba) DeMasi. Raised in Brooklyn, NY she had been a seamstress in The Garment District and came to Westfield with her former husband, the late Joseph Sottile where she resided for 16 years. While in Westfield she enjoyed bowling and was captain of her bowling team. She had been employed by the former Barmon Brothers Sewing Factory prior to moving back to Brooklyn. While back home in Brooklyn, she attended Beauty School and opened her own Beauty Shop, called Castle of Elegance, in New Hyde Park, Long Island, which she operated for many years. She enjoyed living her retired senior years in Penn Yan, NY, residing near her son. Other than bowling she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and cooking. She is survived by her son, Donald S. Sottile of Penn Yan, NY, her sister, Rose Franzone of Wilmington, DE and by her several grandchildren: Barbara Kelly of Strawbridge, PA, Nicholas Taverna, III and John Taverna both of Long Island, Joseph Taverna of SC, and Lisa Burgess of PA. Several great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marjorie Taverna, her sister, Fannie Vari, and by her 5 brothers, Dominic, Joseph, Sam, Patrick, and John DeMasi Services will be announced at a later date.
