WESTFIELD - Elmo Tippens, age 90, of Fredonia, formerly of Westfield, died Sunday evening, June 19, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA, following a brief illness. Elmo was born on January 25, 1926 in Paden City, WV, a son of the late John and Bessie (Hoskins) Tippens. A graduate of Paden City Schools, Elmo joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific Theater from 1943-1946 aboard the USS LST 546 as they were preparing to invade Japan when the War ended. He had resided in Westfield for over 30 years and had resided in Fredonia for the past 10 years. He had worked for a short time at the former Dunkirk Glass Factory and retired in 1984 from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Co., in Dunkirk after 31 years of service. Elmo was a member of the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion , the Wm. P Jackway Post 6764 VFW and the Loyal Order of Moose # 118 all of Westfield. He was also a member of the WW II Vets Club of Dunkirk, the Kosciuszko Polish Home of Dunkirk and the Dunkirk Irondequoit Lodge 301 F & AM. He is survived by his two sons, Robert (Elaine) Tippens of Dunkirk, NY and Gary (Brenda) Tippens of Lake Arrowhead, CA. Elmo was the proud grandfather of: Darrin (Kelly) Tippens, Pamela (Saul) Rugani, Amanda (Chris) Rostadt, Brandon Tippens, Amber (Michael) Hewey and Matthew Tippens and great grandfather of, Joshua and Cole Tippens, Makenna and Nicholas Rugani, Kyle, Kayla and Kalley Rostadt and Anna Bella Hewey. He is further survived by his Companion, Joan Azeez of Sunset Bay, NY, and by his two sisters, Phyllis Phomas of Paden City, WV and Rosemary Cherry of Port Jervis, NY and his brother, Jerry Tippens of Lancaster, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Clara (Dutton) Tippens, whom he married on June 14, 1947 and who died on February 12, 2003, and by his 2 Brothers, John and Robert Tippens, and his 2 sisters, Betty Haynes and Ruth Ann Bentley. Friends may call on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 4-7 PM at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY, and are invited to attend the Funeral Services there on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dana Vaughn officiating. Private burial will be in Union Cemetery, Westfield, NY. Memorials may be made to Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department, 80 West Main St., Fredonia, NY 14063.
