Obituary of Robert Smith
WESTFIELD - Robert W. ?Smitty? Smith, age 76, of North Gale St., Westfield died Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Waters of Westfield following an extended illness.
Bob was born on October 31, 1930 in Irving, NY the son of the late Henry W. and Florence (Cross) Smith.
A Westfield resident since 1937, Smitty had been employed by the US Postal Service as a Letter Carrier in the village of Westfield for over 32 years retiring on June 3,1988. Following his retirement from the Post Office, Smitty became Westfield's 1st Harbormaster in 1988, a position he held until health prohibited him from doing his duties in 2001. He was a graduate of Westfield Academy and was a US Air Force Veteran having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westfield for over 50 years, a 50 year member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 118 of Westfield, and also belonged to the Wm. P. Jackway VFW Post 6764 and the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion both of Westfield.
Smitty enjoyed people. He always had a smile and a quick sense of humor and wit. He coached the White Sox Little League Team for 14 years, believing that everyone on the team should be played. Smitty himself played on several area Base Ball teams and leagues and was quite a ball player in his younger years. He was an avid hunter of rabbits, and enjoyed the outdoors. He and his family enjoyed camping and the fellowship of friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene B. (Green) Smith whom he married on March 31, 1956 in the Methodist Church of Brocton, and his two sons: Bradley R. Smith of Phoenix, AZ, and Blaine A. Smith of Cheyenne, WY, his two Grandsons, Bradley R. Smith, Jr. of Stockton, NY and Brandon J. Smith of North East, PA, as well as his Great Grandson, Bradley R. Smith, III of Stockton, NY
He was preceded in death by his two sons, Bret D. and Brian K. Smith.
No calling hours will be observed. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, July 7th at 11:00AM in the United Methodist Church of Westfield, with Rev. Matthew Golibersuch officiating. Private burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
